Fireworks at Navy Pier, Chicago

On my final night in Chicago I went to Shedd Aquarium to listen to Jazz and watch the fireworks at Navy Pier. It’s a great view from the Aquarium because you have Navy Pier to your right and the city’s looming skyscrapers to your left. And with a refreshing beverage in hand and live jazz as the soundtrack? Yes please!

Chicago Architecture River Cruise

The Chicago Architecture Tour by the Chicago Architecture Foundation is not cheap ($32) but if you are interested in this sort of thing, it’s totally worth it. As you cruise the Chicago River you get a full 90 minute live commentary by an expert and learn about the history of the city, the impact of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 and about some of the architects that helped shape the beautiful skyline as we see it today.

Tip: Buy tickets directly from the shop at 224 South Michigan Avenue. Buying online will hit you with taxes plus a $6 “convenience fee”.

The Silver Bean

Officially called Cloud Gate, this shiny piece of art is incredibly photogenic. I took 65 photos of it but I won’t put you through that so here are 12.

The sculpture sits at AT&T Plaza in Millennium Park within the Loop area of Chicago. Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor takes the credit for the 168 stainless steel plates that are welded together but The Silver Bean is so highly polished that there are no visible seams. It’s heaps of fun, especially if you’re directly underneath it because the reflections there are particularly kaleidoscope-like.

Chicago: A bird’s eye view

Chicago is my latest favourite city. It’s big but not menacing, has excellent live music venues, breathtaking architecture and is perched on the border of a lake so big that it looks like the ocean. Need I say more?
