Profile on: Diablo Cody, screenwriter, ex-stripper and author

This is the fourth in a series of posts about interesting, inspiring and influential people. Today’s profile is on Brook Busey, better known by her pen name, Diablo Cody. You might not be completely familiar with her name yet, but you’ll definitely recognise what she’s been involved in. Her success as a writer inspires me immensely. After watching Young Adult last month, my immediate thoughts were, “Wow, this story, this script, these ideas…..are so invigorating.”

Snapshot of Notable Facts & Achievements:

  • Graduated from the University of  Iowa with a media studies degree.
  • Her first jobs were secretarial work at a law firm, and proofreading copy for radio ads.
  • Wrote a parody blog called Red Secretary which detailed the fictional exploits of a secretary living in Belarus. Started her first non-fiction blog under the nickname Darling Girl after moving from Chicago to Minneapolis.
  • Cody signed up for amateur night at a Minneapolis strip club. She quit her day job and took up stripping full-time for a year, chronicling the experience in a popular blog called Pussy Ranch.
  • While still stripping, she began writing for several publications, including a column for the magazine Entertainment Weekly.
  • When she was 24, Cody wrote her memoir Candy Girl: A Year in the Life of an Unlikely Stripper.
  • Cody was encouraged by Mason Novick, film producer and talent manager (who would become her manager), who secured a publishing contract with Gotham Books after the popularity of The Pussy Ranch.
  • Novick had originally shown interest in Cody’s fresh and sarcastic voice, and after the memoir, encouraged her to write her first screenplay: Juno.
  • Juno was runner up for the Toronto Film Festival People’s Choice Award. Cody won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
  • In 2007, she sold a script called Jennifer’s Body to Fox Atomic. The film would star Megan Fox.
  • In 2009, Cody’s series The United States of Tara, starring Toni Collette began airing.
  • She wrote and and was a producer for Young Adult, the 2011 film starring Charlize Theron.
  • Cody is good friends with and draws inspiration from fellow screenwriters including Dana Fox (What Happens in Vegas) and  Lorene Scafaria (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist).
  • She is currently directing her first movie.
  • Has won screenplay honours from BAFTA, the Writers Guild of America, Broadcast Film Critics Association and more.
