Day 30: My favourite song #30daysofme

Eeeep! This question is very tricky! How can I possibly pick just one song? I can’t. So here are my top most loved songs that I can think of right now. (Unfortunately I am having trouble uploading the individual songs, but I’m sure you know most or all of these).

1) Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts I-V’
Beautiful, provoking instrumentals introduce an emotive song.

2) Chris Isaak, Wicked Game
Sexiest. Voice. Ever.

3) Chemical Brothers, Surface to Air
This track makes me feel positive and excited about life. Can’t go wrong with that.

4) Queen & David Bowie, Under Pressure
Just plain awesome!

Day 29: What I have learnt in the past month #30daysofme

Over the past month I’ve learnt that it’s quite a challenge to do a daily blog post, especially if you don’t always like the topics! But it’s been a great challenge and I’ve enjoyed applying myself.

Most of all, I’ve enjoyed reading other peoples’ entries….some have been very entertaining, enlightening and clever.

Other things I’ve learnt in the last month:
  • Apparently in Disneyland they pump out food aromas so you feel more hungry
  • Also apparently in Las Vegas clubs they pump out oxygen so you can go for longer
  • A large proportion of men who are in Vegas appear to have read ‘The Game’ and claim to be in nurturing jobs such as child psychology or pediatrics
  • The Purple Heart Trail is a symbolic route that runs through USA to commemorate those who have been wounded or killed in combat while serving in the US armed forces
  • Air Tahiti does really good food
  • Mustang Convertibles are hot but not recommended for more than two people – you’re better off with a Chrysler mini-van
  • West Hollywood is a gay district
  • You can pretty much get high without trying if you walk through Santa Barbara’s State St at night
  • Al Capone died from syphilis

Day 28: A picture of me last year and now – how have I changed? #30daysofme

This time last year I went to Thailand, resigned from my job and was planning my 7-month trip for 2010. A year later I am still traveling (well, returned today), still unemployed and wondering what the next few months will bring. I have changed in many ways – I am no longer scared of uncertainty…in fact, it is routine that frightens me. I am more relaxed than I was before but am quicker to ditch situations or people that don’t have anything to offer.

Each country I’ve been to this year has taught me a little more about people, history and culture. However, I’m no closer to finding the answer to “what I’m supposed to do with my life” – maybe ignorance really is bliss because the more you see, the more you want.

Physically I’ve not changed much other than letting my natural hair colour grow out, and maybe I have a few more smile lines 🙂

Day 27: Why I’m doing this 30-day challenge #30daysofme

I’m doing this challenge because it sounded like fun, opened up some creativity and was a nice little goal to have. It’s been interesting to read everyone’s responses too….this is how I first learnt about the challenge!

I probably didn’t choose the best month to do it in, but then again you never know what’s going to come up next!

Day 26: What I think about my friends #30daysofme

This is an odd topic, isn’t it? Obviously I like my friends, otherwise they wouldn’t be my friends! My friends are funny, smart, beautiful, caring, have good taste in music and like to let off steam. Unfortunately many of my good friends have dispersed around the globe but it makes it all the more exciting when I do see them.

Unlike a lot of females my age I don’t have one or two “best friends” but I have several close friends for different purposes. There are a couple that I can tell almost everything to (the Scorpio in me prohibits from spilling my whole life story to any one individual). There are some that I party with only. There are some that I catch up with for meals and a good convo. There are some that I can travel with. There are some that I go watch a foreign film with, and there are a few that I can do almost anything with.

I have high standards for my friends. Friendship is about reciprocity and I expect my friends to treat me how I treat them. There are very few things that I wouldn’t do for my friends.

But there are some quotes that express how I feel about my friends and friendship better than I can, so here you go:

“One measure of friendship consists not in the number of things friends can discuss, but in the number of things they need no longer mention.”

“A friend is one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be.”

“A true friend never gets in your way unless you happen to be going down.”

“It is the friends you can call up at 4am that matter.”

“Since there is nothing so well worth having as friends, never lose a chance to make them.”

Day 23: Something I crave for a lot #30daysofme

I crave new experiences! I love going to new places and meeting awesome people. I love to travel and feed elephants in Thailand, help preserve the turtles in Costa Rica, climb up Machu Picchu, go to a Jazz bar in Chicago, try scorpion in China and stand on Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni (pictured).

Day 21: A picture of something that makes me happy #30daysofme

What makes me happy is what has a large impact on me, so see this post

Other things that make me happy are:

  • Red wine
  • Flowers
  • Smiles
  • Laughter
  • Hugs
  • Dogs
  • Babies
  • Amusement park rides
  • Positive people
  • Travel

Day 19: Nicknames I have and why #30daysofme

It's easy to get nicknames when you have a weird name. I've had some real doozies with the pronunciation of my name but it often leads to entertaining results.

  • My family calls me Soli which is pronounced in an Argentinean accent, not a Kiwi/Samoan/other Pacific Island accent. So it's not Solly or Solay and I actually don't really like anyone other than my family calling me this. (There are one or two exceptions).

  • Many of my good friends call me Sol which I do really like.

  • Yvette calls me a number of things, one being Syringe Fransauce. This is a direct result of other people's mispronunciations.

  • My old work colleagues call me Sillyinge or Solingy. This is fine and I like it but only when it comes from them.

  • Jo calls me Travel Bud because we have traveled lots together.

  • Fraser often calls me Flange – this is associated with how some people pronounce the second half of my name with an American accent instead of British. I don't like it when that happens, but I do like Flange.

  • Christine calls me Frilly because it matches what I call her. Only Christine can call me this.

  • Rachel calls me Camille because that is my alter-ego name on our trip.

Day 18: Plans/dreams/goals I have #30daysofme

I find this task a little personal so instead of divulging my dreams I hereby present you with a photo of a beautiful butterfly.
